Common Roofing Issues to Watch Out For
The roof is a vital part of your home for keeping out the weather and maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. However, many roofing problems can arise over time that threaten the ability of a roof to do its job. There are a variety of roofing issues to watch out for in advance of any required maintenance or repair work. At Bulldog Roofing, we know what these issues are and are prepared to help you resolve them quickly and efficiently.
Here are some roofing problems to keep an eye out for when you own a home:
Raised Shingles
Trees around the home can cause damage to roof shingles when small branches rub up against shingles damaging them or when part or all of a tree falls on a house. Inclement weather over time may cause raised shingles as well. If raised shingles are not nailed back down soon enough, water may infiltrate and cause additional damage to underlying materials and even enter your home.
Roof Leaks
Many homeowners face the problem of roof leaks. These leaks can form in various places of a roof structure. It is important to check areas of the roof where water can collect. Any standing water may eventually permit moisture into the house, leading to mildew, rot, and mold that can damage the home’s structure.
The areas to check for leaks include near flashing points, around pipes, vents, and chimneys, on low areas of the roof, and around damaged gutters and shingles.
Defective Gutters
Gutters sometimes malfunction, allowing an accumulation of water instead of channeling the water down to a drain. Look for gutter damage and gutter blockage that clogs the system, including branches, leaves, and dead animals. Professional roofers can add a sieve to the gutter system to prevent unwanted materials from backing up the system.
Shrinking Materials
Warping, cracking, and other material breakdown on a roof can be caused by temperature fluctuations over time that cause expansion and contraction of the roof structure. This can lead to holes and openings that reduce the energy efficiency of your home. Synthetic rubber membrane as a roof covering is vulnerable to shrinking but less vulnerable to water damage.
Inadequate Construction
Some roofers fail to install roofing components properly which can lead to roof damage stemming from loose shingles, protruding nails, and other issues. If you notice poor construction, it is important to address it with proper repair in order to prevent more expensive issues down the road.
